Beginning with a short introduction of the origins of guinea pigs and their wild ancestors and cousins, this book gives helpful insights to the natural disposition of the guinea pig. This information, in turn, can help puzzled owners to understand their furry little friends. The authors then discuss topics such as selecting a pet, appropriate housing, nutritional needs, illness, breeding, and showing.

Responsible pet ownership is stressed throughout the book. All people considering a pet must reflect on their ability and willingness to provide daily attention as well as veterinary care. Guinea pig owners must also give thoughtful consideration for safety when designing the habitat for their pets. The welfare of pets is of utmost importance to all who choose to raise animals.

Additionally, the authors advocate a preventative medicinal approach to health care. Quarantine of newcomers, frequent cage cleanings, and regular checkups are the essentials. When a medical diagnosis is needed, the authors insist on qualified vet rather than "expert" friends. Since guinea pigs are excellent at hiding illnesses, taking preventative measures is essential in guinea pig care.

This book is well written and includes many large (several are full page) beautiful, glossy photographs. It is an excellent resource for prospective owners and beginners in need of basic information about guinea pig care. It is also a handy resource for those with more experience, especially since it focuses on the prevention of disease rather than treatment.
